Let's face it. As the little kids on the healthcare playground,
independent practitioners have been bullied for years.
While hospitals and other large volume purchasers have been able to look to group purchasing organizations (sort of like big brothers) to help keep distributor supply costs in line, physician-owned ASCs and office-based practices have been left to fend for themselves.
